A 2022 study by Boston Consulting Group found the secondhand clothing market is already worth 3% to 5% of the overall apparel sector, with more people citing sustainability as a factor in what they choose to buy. And while thrifting has a smaller carbon footprint than fast fashion, it can still take an environmental toll.
As sustainability becomes an increasingly important factor in the clothing industry, the rise in thrifting and swapping is a promising start to reducing our carbon footprint. The hope for advocates moving forward is that fashion manufacturers will follow in their lead, and create more environmentally friendly options for people to purchase.

This cute little pixel title has you running your own clothing store, then cultivating it into a world-renowned super brand. Embrace your inner fashionista, and put Vivienne Westwood to shame, as you set up interesting stands, promotions, and layouts to lure in shoppers, then offer them fashion advice and help them coordinate ensembles for big events. Helping your patrons up their style even unlocks new career paths for them, which brings even more bucks to your store.
Based on the super popular toy brand, L.O.L Surprise! Movie Night is a 3D adventure where your goal is to become a top movie star, glamming it up in the latest fashion as you hit the red (or pink) carpet.
The first game in the L.O.L Surprise! universe, We Rule the World sees you start from scratch, with a new home and an empty closet that are entirely yours to customise. Like Movie Night, We Rule the World features a fun 3D world for you to explore, heaps of accessories and outfits for you to try on, and tons of fun mini games, quests, and more to enjoy.
I've seen other fashion games. I signed up for one, but I'm so far along in Covet, the idea of spending money to start a fashion game from scratch just wasn't appealing to me. I'm just wondering if anyone has thought about trying or actually successfully started playing another fashion app game?
Cozy games are still doing well for themselves, especially on the Nintendo Switch. Multiple games within the genre were unveiled during the early 2023 Nintendo Direct showcase, including the life simulators Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time and Fashion Dreamer. While fashion games were popular during the heyday of the Nintendo DS, few have been developed in recent years. The development of Fashion Dreamer and its innovative take on combining life simulator mechanics with fashion elements might point to a bright -- but different -- future for the cozy game genre.
As the Nintendo Switch has gained more players, games in the "cozy" genre have been among some of the most popular games available on the console. Particular standouts are Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, two of the most popular video and best-selling games on the Nintendo Switch. The games have achieved enduring popularity based on multiple factors -- including compelling gameplay, memorable characters, and player freedom -- but their ability to host multiplayer functionality is a particular triumph. While very little is known about Fashion Dreamer, it appears to have the same emphasis on player freedom and community that some of the best cozy games have.
One of the hallmarks of the "cozy" game genre is that players are given the freedom to play their way through a relaxing escape from everyday life. Fashion Dreamer allows players to step into the shoes of a fashion influencer avatar called a "Muse," creating trends, designing clothing, and building their platform. The game will include over 1,000 different clothing and style options, making it possibly one of the most nuanced fashion games ever created. Players can also interact with other Muses by exploring the world of Eve, recommending outfits, and trying on other player-created looks.
For gamers who are fans of fashion and life simulators, Fashion Dreamer might be the perfect game to satisfy both needs. The game's focus on character personalization is particularly immersive compared to other life simulators, allowing players to create and customize their avatar as a means of gameplay, not just for aesthetics. While very little is known about the upcoming game, it will seemingly benefit from the popularity of cozy life simulator games like My Time at Portia and Cozy Grove while providing a new take on the genre. The popularity of the Animal Crossing clothing customization system bodes well for the future of Fashion Dreamer and games like it.
Nintendo Switch gamers may be unaware that Fashion Dreamer is only the latest announced fashion-influenced game for developer Syn Sophia. Syn Sophia was behind the development of the Style Savvy series released on the Nintendo DS and 3DS. While the Style Savvy franchise is still trapped on the DS, quite a few fashion games have been created since. For instance, The Sims 4 unveiled a "style influencer" career path that allows players to give other Sims makeovers and build a following. The Sims 3: Ambitions expansion pack also debuted a "stylist" career path centered around dressing and styling other Sims based on their needs.
Fashion Dreamer seems to be an excellent fit for the Nintendo Switch, satisfying players with an itch for fashion design who also want to play on the go. Hopefully, the in-game world of Eve will allow for nuanced cozy gameplay, including main quests, side quests, interior design, fashion design challenges, and maybe even social interaction mechanics like friendship and romance. It also remains to be seen if Fashion Dreamer will include an overarching storyline. Still, since the game is being made in collaboration with XSEED Games -- a subsidiary of the famed Harvest Moon developer Marvelous -- chances are good that it'll fit right into the cozy game genre.
Sangita is a game designer and writer whose first love is videogames. Sangita's first videogame was Harvest Moon - from then on she's been playing every farming simulator game she can. When she's not playing farming sims, she's playing old-school rpgs or running a D&D game.
Let's all get nostalgic for a moment and remember all those old-fashioned games we used to play as kids. Those games stood the test of time long before we played them and now it's our children's turn to enjoy some good old retro fun and games!
You can find lots of traditional, centuries-old DIY games like Tapatan or Len Choa here on the blog. For this resource of screen-free, old-school games I focused on games and activities that kids can play by themselves (as well as with others), so you don't need to gather together for a play date, or have a large family in order to enjoy them.
Most of these indoor old-fashioned games can be played solo even though a few are designed for two or more people. Of course, being inside is not a requirement, but the games don't require a lot of physical activity or space, making them perfect for those stuck-inside days.
You may think marbles is an old fashioned outdoor game, but these kids demonstrate how to play indoors. There are different versions of the game. Your kids could even make up their own rules! Like the game of jacks, kids can practice their marble-shooting skills solo.
Tin can stilts (aka "monster stompers") are a must. Sure you can buy a plastic version of can stilts, but it's so much more fun and better for the environment to make your own. Like Skip-it, this old-fashioned activity is great for coordination and gross motor skills.
